He uses the fourth feather every day because he keeps the record, and he keeps the record because he uses the fourth feather every day. He does not regard this as a conflict. He regards it as the only honest arrangement the industry left standing.
The Keeper shot three feathers for twenty years, the way you did, the way your father did, the way the catalogs intended. He did not question it. There was nothing on the wall to question.
Then, on an indoor eighteen-meter line on an ordinary Tuesday, he fletched a fourth feather and shot it beside the others. He could not afterward say precisely what changed, only that he could not unsee it — and that no one in the sport could tell him when, or why, the fourth feather had quietly left the standard arrow.
He founded the Guild to keep the account the industry had abandoned, and he began making the vane himself, because the people who removed it could not be trusted to put it back. He reviews that vane plainly and without sponsorship, and he is aware of how that sounds. He makes it anyway, because someone has to make it correctly.
